N. Y. C.'s Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder

A couple months ago, I purchased the mega-hyped N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder (720A/Sunny) at my local Ulta.

One thing a lot of people complain about is the fact it's difficult to find a natural looking bronzer without shimmer or sparkles.  I, for one, don't mind getting my Edward Cullen sparkle on.  (However, I prefer keeping my shirt on when glittering in the sunlight, unlike my favorite vampire.)

Having said that, matte bronzer is better for contouring.  It also seems more winter-friendly, if that makes sense.

Here is my pros and cons list:

Pros:  matte, natural color, doesn't break my extremely sensitive skin out, dirt cheap at $2.99

Cons:  no hinge on the compact, takes a bit of elbow grease to build up the color

Would I re-purchase this?  Yep, but I'm still going to try out other matte bronzers in the meantime.  Any suggestions?

Have a great day, y'all!

NYC is one of my favorite drug-store brands. I've heard a lot about this bronzer and will check it out once my old bronzers run out. MY HG is the Korres bronzer in Sunglow light. It is mostly matte, maybe with a teeny tiny hint of shimmer but not enough to really notice.

April - You know what's funny? I was working on this post and commenting on your YT channel at the same time. LOL! And oh, man... I love Edward... I don't care that he sparkles like a girl! Ha ha!

Bombchell - I am so sad. We had to leave the theater early and missed more than half the movie! :( The fight scenes were the only ones I think my husband would have liked. LOL! It's probably better we left... I couldn't handle seeing my vampire BF get hit!

Beautygirl24 - Oooh, what other N.Y.C. products have you tried? I've only used their bronzer!

Gosh, I keep hearing good things about the Korres line. I'm going to go look at that bronzer! A hint of shimmer sounds like perfection! :)

diamndprncss - Sure thing! I like sharing sale info when I come across it! I think I might start making this a regular thing. :)

Ooooooo, I too have heard quite the rave with this bronzer, I'll have to keep it in mind when going to Ulta :)

I have a million bronzers...the one that gives the most color payoff is Laura Geller's Baked Bronze N Brighten Powder, you have to have a super duper light hand with it! I've had it forever (ordered on 5/24/2007 and the thing doesn't look like it was touched!). Purchased from QVC :)

I wanna see the bronzer ON you ;-)

J-ezzy said...

Oh, forgot to mention, I have the regular tone, just recently Laura Geller makes one in a fair tone, I think I'll stick to regular!

Kate Gene said...

J-ezzy - WOW! That bronzer has lasted you since May of 2007?! That's awesome! I like watching QVC. They always have good deals on make-up products!

If you have the regular tone, that's probably what I'd need to get, too. Do you know if the bronzer is hypoallergenic/non-comedogenic? I have wussy skin that breaks out easily!

Thanks for the product heads up! :)

I got my sister a stila bronzer :D It looks mostly matte, and I might steal it back because I don't think she's using it! LOLL.. I'ma kick her butt :P (although she's like 9 years older than me)

I love R&R packaging, it's so beautiful, but I don't think I will be buying anymore products from them for a while because the rest of the products just simply don't look too wearable to me! haha, I only get it whenever it goes on sale at hautelook though because they have great prices! ^_^

J-ezzy - I've been bumming around in sweats and no make-up. Should I post pictures of that? Ha ha ha!

Lindah - I've heard good things about Stila's bronzer! I actually found some that was on sale, but didn't jump on it when I had the chance. D'oh! Good luck kicking your sister's butt. LOL!

Thanks for the heads up on where to get R&R stuff! Maybe one of these days I'll order a compact and just use it for the mirror. LOL!

I just bought this on a whim at Ulta the other day!! I've heard good things about it, and the truth is you just can't beat that price. :)

Kate Gene said...

Hi, Kate!

Great name! LOL! You are absolutely right... You cannot beat the price! I'm a cheapskate when it comes to make-up, so this bronzer was right up my alley! :)

Errr, hypoallergenic/non-comedogenic? I don't think so, it's never irritated my skin. I read the reviews online and supposedly less than 10 ppl got irritated. Do you break out with Studio Fix Fluid and what color would that be if you use it?

Pahahaha, sweats and no makeup, you crack me up! I am willing to do a post of myself all natural (I have them in my picasa web albums I bet too). I'm just not sure if everyone wants to see rosacea and severe uneven tone "/...

Hahaha you are funny!!!!
This bronzer looks fab though!!
Ohh your Christmas sounds just lovely- hope you and yours have a wonderful, wonderful day :) xx

Mona said...

HIYA!!

have you tried benefit bronzer in hoola?

Kate Gene said...

J-ezzy - I sound like such a dork. "Is that hypoallergenic/non-comedogenic? Does that have shrimp in it? Has this been sanitized?" Pwhahaha!

Believe it or not, I've never tried Studio Fix Fluid! I don't wear any foundation. Crazy, huh? I conceal and wear bronzer only. I think I'm the only girl in the world who doesn't wear primer/foundation!

My friend works for MAC. When I go in and to see her, I'm going to ask her to figure out what shade I am because I think it'd help people when they're looking at my swatches! What shade are you?

Sarah - I am definitely a fan of this bronzer! Even the cheap packaging doesn't really bother me. I just have to be careful when opening and closing it. LOL! Merry Christmas to you, too! <3 your avatar, BTW!

Mona - Hello! The SA who was helping me at Ulta suggested I check it out, but couldn't find the tester and then said I should just stick with my N.Y.C. bronzer for now. LOL! It's on my list, though! :)

Kate Gene said...

Giang - Aww, thank you so much! I'm having so much fun blogging... I've met some really fun girls on here! I don't know why I didn't start sooner!

wow im so wanting to try this, and only 3 bucks???damnn
hehe
yeah i love that pool view too
hehe

Kate Gene said...

Vanilla - I couldn't believe the price either! Even I was really skeptical that it'd be any good, which says a lot because I use some pretty low-end products. LOL!

Your view is really amazing! I once got an eyeful of a neighbor across the street without anything on from the waist down. Wanna trade? LOL!!!!

J-ezzy said...

IDK how you do it, you always crack me up!

Honey, I just bought liquid foundation for *almost* the first time this Fall (I had a Mary Kay one once years ago and didn't rebuy it, same for a Smashbox foundation...which is still full).

Bronzer is a girls best friend, however! Oh yeah, I have used another foundation, but it's not really a founsation, it's called Laura Geller's Balance and Brighten, look it up on QVC (whom I love, as you do). It's good for ruddiness (which is the story of my life).

I'm NW30, a bit darker than I thought I would be.

I got this bronzer today after reading your review on it :) I'm excited to try it out!

Good matte bronzers:
-Benefit Hoola
-Smashbox Suntan Matte Bronzer

D - That's awesome! Let me know how you like it! I really like the color it gives my skin. Without it, I look sickly. What kind of brush are you going to use to apply it?

I really want to try the Benefit and Smashbox bronzers! The Benefit one has cute packaging. I haven't seen the Smashbox one, but will check it out the next time I'm at Ulta or Sephora! Thanks for the suggestions! :)
